About the Faculty

Students of the first three years of study are mainly exposed to humanitarian, socio-economic, natural science and medical-biological disciplines. Senior years focus on clinical and professional medical and preventive disciplines including: general hygiene, epidemiology, food hygiene, occupational health, hygiene of children and teens, communal hygiene, radiation and military hygiene, public health and health care.

The Academy has created all necessary conditions for developing in students the necessary knowledge and skills. Students are introduced to practical outreach sessions in occupational hygiene, communal hygiene, hygiene of children and adolescents, etc., where they are directly acquainted with their future profession.

  • Centre for Hygiene and Epidemiology in the RD, Makhachkala

Updated Curriculum & Standards

In accordance with new educational standards approved by Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation on August 12, 2010 No. 847, significant changes were introduced on 01.09.2011 — both in the structure of disciplines and in the designation of qualification diplomas. The term of study at the Faculty is 6 years with a total labour input of 360 units (as an Official).

Compared to the 2000 plan, the new curriculum focuses on increasing the load on medical and preventive disciplines. Number of hours in epidemiology and hygiene disciplines increased by almost 1.5–2 times. More than 30% increase in the time allotted for industrial practice. New curriculum introductions include: clinical laboratory diagnostics, the legal bases of activity of expert framework for the protection of consumer rights, health economics, and fundamentals of management.

At the same time, the number of hours in the clinical disciplines is reduced by 30%, and in some subjects by 2 times — reflecting the faculty's strong specialisation in preventive and public health medicine.

Professional Activity of Graduates

According to the educational standard, the area of professional activity of specialists includes practical health care and medical science dealing with targeted development and application of technologies, tools, techniques and methods of medical practice aimed at:

  • Ensuring sanitary and epidemiological welfare of the population
  • Preservation and improvement of health through the provision of preventive, curative diagnostic, medical, social and other types of assistance
  • Supervision in the field of consumer protection

Graduates of the faculty can work as hygienists, epidemiologists, parasitologists, bacteriologists, virologists in Rospotrebnadzor institutions, medical institutions, research institutions and sanitary epidemiological profiles.

Graduate Career Destinations

After graduation, a graduate of the Faculty is prepared for:

  • Organization and management bodies and institutions FGUZ "Hygiene and Epidemiology Centre"
  • Activities concerning the sanitary and epidemiological welfare of the population
  • Development of methods of hygiene education and professional functions to promote a healthy lifestyle

Today, medical-prophylactic faculty graduates work in various positions in the republics of the North Caucasus, Moscow, St. Petersburg and other regions of Russia.

Student Achievements

Over the past five years, competition among students entering the health-prophylactic faculty has remained the highest of all faculties. From year to year the number of students consciously choosing this future profession increases.

5 students of the medical-prophylactic faculty became winners of the prestigious international Olympiad "Scholars of the World", where students of leading Russian higher educational institutions and foreign countries took part. In each edition, from 10 to 20% of the graduates completed their studies with honours and high honours. Every year, 5–7 students receive All-Russian and regional scholarship awards for excellent study and active participation in public life of the academy.
